During the period covered by this book the majority of English Electric loco's used in North Wales were class 40s, although the fact that these engines featured three different nose layouts (disc, split route code box and single route code box) makes for more variety than this implies. Class 20s and Class 37s also make an appearance (the latter being introduced to this region near the end of the period covered by this volume), as does the experimental GT3 gas turbine locomotive. The photographs, most of which are at least very good, have been selected to represent locations along the entire route between Chester and Holyhead, some of which necessarily show views that don't exist any more due to later rerouting at points between Abergele and Colwyn Bay to accommodate the upgraded A55 Expressway.
