Description

The Chester Gaslight Company was established in 1817 by Deed of Settlement and operated as a non-statutory company. Its facilities were located on Cuppin Street and were built by Samuel Clegg. Pressure from the Chester Watch Committee and public dissatisfaction with costs led to several attempts to create a competing gas company in the town. In 1845, a complete reorganization of the works aimed to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

In 1850, a rival company, the Chester Gas Consumers Company, attempted to establish itself but failed to raise sufficient capital for a successful launch. In 1851, Samuel Highfield, an engineer from the Birkenhead gasworks, constructed a second gasworks at Roodee, on the outskirts of Chester. He entered into a provisional agreement with the Chester Corporation to supply gas from this facility. The Roodee Gas Company was formed by Deed of Settlement in 1854 and soon began negotiations to merge with the Chester Gaslight Company.

By August 1856, the Chester United Gas Company was formed, with E. Salisbury, formerly of the Roodee Gas Company, serving as chairman. The Roodee works underwent reconstruction in 1880, and a series of Acts of Parliament expanded the gas supply area to include surrounding villages. The collection includes minute books, property records, and some technical documents.
