Gone With Regret by George Behrend -Recollections of the Great Western Railway 1922 - 1947

This volume is a personal account of the Great Western Railway. The author spent most of his life on GWR territory: Newbury, Marlborough, Oxford, and Jersey. He describes privatized railways as they were, including GWR domestic airliners and diesel railcars. A wartime journey in an Italian cattle truck is an example of a not so obvious connection with the GWR. Included are poetic quotations by Sir John Betjeman and Thomas Hardy. The appendices have various lists which cover 300 GWR motor buses (1928), 160 GWR bus routes, a list of 150 preserved engines, engine shed codes, wagon codes, and freight train names. The narrative takes the reader up to the 1950s. New material in this edition includes the Torquay Pullman story. The colour jacket was illustrated by Tony Cuneo.
