Product Info

The LMS 'Coronation' Class was an enlarged and improved version of William Stanier's earlier LMS 'Princess Royal' Class. On test, they were the most powerful steam locomotives ever used in Britain, at 2,511 dbhp, specifically designed for power. The intention from the start was to use them on express services between London Euston and Glasgow Central; their duties included hauling a proposed non-stop express, subsequently named the Coronation Scot.

The first ten locomotives of the Coronation class were built in streamlined form in 1937 by adding a steel streamlined casing. Briefly put into storage at Bletchley, Princess Alexandra re-entered traffic on October 21, 1939. Sent on loan to Polmadie on 25 November, the locomotive remained allocated there until its withdrawal in October 1963. While there, the streamlined casing was removed on 27 June 1946.
