A tippler wagon is a unique type of wagon on British Railways. While many variations on the concept exist the core functionality is the same. Loading and unloading wagons is often the most time-consuming part of rail freight and to get around this the tippler wagon was designed to be unloaded via the inverting of the entire wagon on an enormous unloading jig.
Several companies, including BR and Cappagh Civil Engineering, have employed the bogie tippler wagon. The first batch was built by BREL, with further examples built by Redpath Dorman Long between 1972 and 1977. Initially designed for hauling iron ore, they can also be seen in the modern era hauling quarry products and steel.
