In the past, trains of slate wagons were gravity-run from the quarries at Blaenau Ffestiniog to the harbour at Porthmadoc. This pack of 3 ready-to-run wagons includes 2 un-braked vehicles and 1 braked vehicle. The wagons also come with removable slate loads that are conveniently hollow, allowing modelers to add extra weight if needed.

Roughly one in five wagons was equipped with brakes, and these were distributed throughout the train with the brake handles all pointing towards Porthmadog. Different colors painted on the side bars indicated the various slate quarry companies, and our packs feature random selections of these colors. As these wagons usually ran in long rakes, the models have semi-permanent close-couplings fitted in their NEM pockets. These can be replaced with conventional OO-9 hoop-and-loop couplings (supplied) at each end of the rake if desired.
